Canyonlands Half Marathon and 5 mile

The first Canyonlands Half Marathon was run on May 1, 1976 had just 22 finishers, including a dog. Today, thousands of runners come together in March to enjoy the scenic red rock formations and winding Colorado River that Moab has come to be known for! Running parallel to Arches National Park and the Mighty Colorado, runners are in for a real treat. Long considered a “Bucket List” race, Canyonlands Half Marathon was named by Runners World UK, in their article “The Worlds Greatest Races,”  in the July 2018 issue.

Canyonlands Half Marathon and Five Mile is part of our Run Moab Series.

Course Information

Lucky runners will start at Sandy Beach, a boat launching site located next to the Colorado River. Pre-race jitters are replaced the excitement as runners take in awe inspiring views of towering red rock canyon walls and the red reflections of the rising sun. The course will travel east for a half mile before turning around and heading down river toward the Moab Valley. After traveling down post-card alley for the entirety of the race, runners will finish at the ever beautiful Lions Park, adjacent to Arches National Park.

Course Time Limits/Road Closure Information

There is a time limit of 3 hours and 30 minutes.

Due to safety concerns and permitting requirements, the Canyonlands Half Marathon course will have strictly enforced cutoff times at miles 3, 6, 9 and 10.6 . Hwy 128 is winding with no shoulder in some sections, so it is imperative that all runners be off the road by Noon. A pace of 15:30/mile or faster will meet the cutoff times. A cushion of 5 minutes is built into the cutoff times to account for the time it takes a runner at the 10+ min/mile pace to cross the starting line after the gun has gone off.

Race Start                          8:15 a.m.

Mile 3 Cutoff                     52 minutes                  15:30/mile pace plus 5 minutes

Mile 6 Cutoff                     1 hr 38 minutes          15:30/mile pace plus 5 minutes

Mile 9 Cutoff                     2 hr 25 minutes          15:30/mile pace plus 5 minutes

Mile 10.6                            3 hr 11 minutes          15:30/mile pace plus 5 minutes

If you do not make a cutoff, you MUST board the sweep vehicle. Keep in mind that course services including aid stations and medical will also be discontinued once the sweep vehicle comes through. The finish line closes at 12:15 pm.

Hwy 128 is closed to traffic from 8 am to Noon between Mile Post 14 and Hwy 191. This includes bicycle and pedestrian tra
